FOLLOW THE WOOD PLANK ROAD
Kennedy Park is getting a lot of press lately with the groundbreaking of the Wolf River Greenway – a 1.5 mile section of the paved trail is being constructed that will be a part of the 36 mile line. But did you know that there is a 2.5 mile natural trail already in the park? Though easy to navigate there are no less than 15 downed trees right now which might be a challenge for some, even those skilled on a bike. The trail does not loop back to the trailhead, or even relatively close to it, which is a downside if you’re looking for a quick hike. The terrain is not unlike other trails along the Wolf River (slight variations in elevation, some sandy parts, creek crossings) but does feature a low-lying area with an elevated “boardwalk”. This rudimentary walkway is actually a very fun skills-builder for those wanting to work on bike handling.
LOTS OF PRETTY COLORS
Like any wooded spot in the region you are sure to find flora that is surprisingly beautiful. I spotted this American Strawberry-bush on our trip. Contrary to the suggestive name, this plant is not edible. There are also several birdhouses constructed along the trail so you’ll probably see some feathered friends as well.
